Medical advisories urge pregnant women and kids under five to avoid runny eggs at restaurants over concerns about salmonella. Consumers are getting sick, and bacterial infections are growing in several locations.
In one case, a Ramona woman sued a local grocery store and an egg ranch after she contracted an illness from their food. A separate outbreak spread across several states, where authorities connected salmonella and E. coli to raw alfalfa sprouts. That outbreak made 55 people ill, sending four to the hospital. Health workers say diners should request fully cooked eggs and skip raw sprouts entirely.
